چکیده
Weyl gravity has been advanced in the recent past as an alternative to General Relativity (GR). The theory has had some success in fitting galactic rotation curves without the need for copious amounts of dark matter. To check the viability of Weyl gravity, we propose two additional classical tests of the theory: the deflection of light and time delay in the exterior of a static spherically symmetric source. The result for the deflection of light is remarkably simple: besides the usual positive (attractive) Einstein deflection of 4GM/r 0 we obtain an extra deflection term of −γr 0 where γ is a constant and r 0 is the radius of closest approach. With a negative γ, the extra term can increase the deflection on large distance scales (galactic or greater) and therefore imitate the effect of dark matter. Notably, the negative sign required for γ is opposite to the sign of γ used to fit galactic rotation curves. The experimental constraints show explicitly that the magnitude of γ is of the order of the inverse Hubble length something already noted as an interesting numerical coincidence in the fitting of galactic rotation curves [9].

The spherically symmetric solutions in Weyl gravity interacting with U (1) or SU (2) gauge fields are examined. It is shown that these solutions are conformally equivalent to an infinite flux tube with constant (color) electric and magnetic fields. This allows us to say that Weyl gravity has in some sense a classical confinement mechanism. We discuss a possible connection with flux tubes in qua...
متن کاملSolar System tests of Hořava–Lifshitz gravity
In the present paper, we consider the possibility of observationally constraining Hořava gravity at the scale of the Solar System, by considering the classical tests of general relativity (perihelion precession of the planet Mercury, deflection of light by the Sun and the radar echo delay) for the spherically symmetric black hole Kehagias– Sfetsos solution of Hořava–Lifshitz gravity. All these ...

A new class of representations of affine Weyl groups on rational functions are constructed, in order to formulate discrete dynamical systems associated with affine root systems. As an application, some examples of difference and differential systems of Painlevé type are discussed.

The constraint structure of the induced 2D-gravity with the Weyl and area-preserving diffeomorphism invariances is analysed in the ADM formulation. It is found that when the area-preserving diffeomorphism constraints are kept, the usual conformal gauge does not exist, whereas there is the possibility to choose the so-called “quasi-light-cone” gauge, in which besides the area-preserving diffeomo...
